The Chicxulub impactor: comet or asteroid?

چکیده
A recent paper by Siraj & Loeb (2021) entitled "Breakup of a long-period comet as the origin dinosaur extinction" attempts to revive perennial debate about what type body hit Earth 66 million years ago, triggering end-Cretaceous extinction. Here we critique and assess evidence it presents. To consider more likely than an asteroid requires extreme assumptions how comets fragment, conflation carbonaceous chondrites with specific types chondrites, blind eye iridium layer.

Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment mission: Kinetic impactor
The Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission will be the first space experiment to demonstrate asteroid impact hazard mitigation by using a kinetic impactor to deflect an asteroid. AIDA is an international cooperation, consisting of two mission elements: the NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission and the ESA Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) rendezvous mission. The prima...
متن کاملComet and Asteroid Hazard to the Terrestrial Planets
We estimated the rate of comet and asteroid collisions with the terrestrial planets by calculating the orbits of 13000 Jupiter-crossing objects (JCOs) and 1300 resonant asteroids and computing the probabilities of collisions based on random-phase approximations and the orbital elements sampled with a 500 yr step. The Bulirsh-Stoer and a symplectic orbit integrator gave similar results for orbit...
متن کاملComet 322P/SOHO1: an asteroid with the smallest perihelion distance?
We observed comet 322P/SOHO 1 (P/1999 R1) from the ground and with the Spitzer Space Telescope when it was between 2.2 and 1.2 AU from the Sun. These are the first observations of any SOHO-discovered periodic comet by a non-solar observatory, and allow us to investigate its behavior under typical cometary circumstances. 322P appeared inactive in all images. Its lightcurve suggests a rotation pe...
متن کاملThe Comet/asteroid Impact Hazard: a Systems Approach
The threat of impact on Earth of an asteroid or comet, while of very low probability, has the potential to create public panic and – should an impact happen – be sufficiently destructive (perhaps on a global scale) that an integrated approach to the science, technology, and public policy aspects of the impact hazard is warranted. This report outlines the breadth of the issues that need to be ad...
متن کاملThe Chicxulub asteroid impact and mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.
The Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary approximately 65.5 million years ago marks one of the three largest mass extinctions in the past 500 million years. The extinction event coincided with a large asteroid impact at Chicxulub, Mexico, and occurred within the time of Deccan flood basalt volcanism in India. Here, we synthesize records of the global stratigraphy across this boundary to assess the pro...
